BJJ Lineage

Carlson Gracie Team: Style and Lineage

About Carlson Gracie Team

Carlson Gracie Sr. was the eldest son of Carlos Gracie and built his own competition team that diverged stylistically from his uncle Helio's more defensive approach. Carlson emphasized top control, smashing pressure, and an aggressive forward-pressure game that became the team's identity.

The Carlson Gracie team was historically one of the dominant forces in Brazilian Vale Tudo and early MMA. Murilo Bustamante (a Carlson Gracie black belt) won the UFC Middleweight Championship, and the Nogueira brothers (Big Nog and Little Nog) became Pride and UFC fighters of historic significance.

Today the team is led by Carlson Gracie Jr. and operates academies worldwide, with strong presences in Chicago, Brazil, the UK, and Asia. The team still emphasizes its signature aggressive, pressure-oriented style.

Style & Philosophy

Top-pressure-dominant style. Strong guard passing, smashing side control, and aggressive forward orientation. Historically a powerhouse in MMA and Vale Tudo.
