How to Do the Idiot Sweep in BJJ
The idiot sweep, also called the dummy sweep, is a deceptively simple sweep performed by pushing on both knees from an open guard position. When the opponent is on their knees in your open guard, you simply push both knees backward, toppling them. Despite its simplicity, it works at all levels when the opponent is not paying attention to their base.
✓ Key Details to Master
- 1 From open guard, place both hands on the opponent's knees
- 2 Push both knees backward simultaneously with a sharp motion
- 3 Time the push when they are leaning slightly forward
- 4 As they fall backward, follow immediately to top position
- 5 The key is timing the push when their weight is forward
✗ Common Mistakes to Avoid
- ⚠️ Pushing the knees when the opponent is based back
- ⚠️ Not pushing both knees simultaneously
- ⚠️ Not following up quickly to top position after the sweep
- ⚠️ Telegraphing the push by reaching obviously for the knees
- ⚠️ Attempting when the opponent has strong grips on you
