What is Upa in BJJ?

Also known as: Trap and roll, Bridge escape, Mount reversal

Quick Definition

The fundamental mount escape using a bridge and roll to reverse position.

Full Explanation

The upa (also called trap and roll or bridge escape) is the fundamental escape from mount. You trap one of the opponent's arms and the same-side leg, bridge explosively, and roll them over to end up in their guard on top. It is typically the first escape taught to beginners. The key is trapping the arm and leg on the same side so they cannot post. The explosive bridge must be committed and powerful to work against experienced opponents.
