What is Trachea in BJJ?

Also known as: Windpipe

Quick Definition

The windpipe, targeted by air chokes to restrict breathing.

Full Explanation

The trachea (windpipe) is the airway tube in the front of the neck. Air chokes work by compressing the trachea, restricting breathing. Unlike blood chokes which cause quick unconsciousness, air chokes are slower and more painful. Crushing the trachea is dangerous and can cause injury. Most BJJ chokes aim for blood choke mechanics rather than tracheal compression because blood chokes are more effective and safer.
