What is Sweep in BJJ?
Quick Definition
A technique from guard that reverses position, putting you on top.
Full Explanation
A sweep is a technique from guard (bottom position) that reverses the position, putting you on top of your opponent. Sweeps are fundamental to guard play - if you can't sweep, your opponent can just stall in your guard. Sweeps are worth 2 points in competition. Common sweeps include scissor sweep, hip bump, flower/pendulum sweep, and butterfly sweep. Good sweeping requires off-balancing (kuzushi) your opponent.
