What is Scissor Takedown in BJJ?

Also known as: Kani basami, Flying scissors

Quick Definition

A takedown using a scissoring leg motion to sweep the opponent off their feet.

Full Explanation

The scissor takedown (also called kani basami) uses a scissoring motion with your legs to sweep the opponent's legs out from under them. One leg goes behind their knees while the other pushes their chest or hips, cutting them down. This technique is banned in many competition rulesets including IBJJF and judo due to knee injury risk. It remains legal in some no-gi rulesets and is effective when allowed.
