What is Rolling in BJJ?
Also known as: Sparring, Live training, Randori
Quick Definition
Live sparring in BJJ, the equivalent of "sparring" in other martial arts.
Full Explanation
Rolling is what BJJ practitioners call live training or sparring. Unlike striking arts where full-power sparring is dangerous, BJJ allows practitioners to train at near 100% intensity because techniques can be stopped once a submission is locked in (you tap). Rolling typically happens at the end of class and is how you test your techniques against a resisting opponent. Rounds are usually 5-6 minutes with partners of varying skill levels.
Examples in Context
""Want to roll?" - asking someone to spar"
""We rolled for 6 rounds after class""
