What is Overhook in BJJ?

Also known as: Whizzer

Quick Definition

A grip where your arm goes over your opponent's arm, trapping it against your body.

Full Explanation

An overhook (also called a whizzer) traps your opponent's arm by going over it and clamping down. While often considered defensive against underhooks, overhooks create their own offensive opportunities. From guard, an overhook can set up triangles, omoplatas, and sweeps. Standing, the whizzer defends single legs and can lead to throws. The overhook game is an entire subsystem in BJJ.

Examples in Context
