What is Mat Burn in BJJ?

Also known as: Rug burn, Friction burn

Quick Definition

Skin abrasion from friction against the mat.

Full Explanation

Mat burn is a friction burn from your skin rubbing against the mat, common on knees, tops of feet, and elbows. It's most common when training no-gi or with skin exposed. Rashguards and spats help prevent it. Fresh mat burn is painful and needs to be cleaned to prevent infection. Tape or bandages can protect existing mat burn during training.
