What is Lapel in BJJ?
Quick Definition
The front fold of the gi jacket, used for grips and chokes.
Full Explanation
The lapel is the front fold of the gi jacket that runs from the collar down to the hem. Lapel grips are fundamental to gi BJJ, providing handles for controlling, sweeping, and choking opponents. Modern BJJ has developed entire guard systems (worm guard, squid guard) based on feeding the lapel around the opponent. The lapel can also be used to tie up opponents or create improvised grips. Lapel play is one of the most creative areas of gi jiu-jitsu.
