What is Kimura in BJJ?

Also known as: Double wristlock, Chicken wing, Gyaku ude-garami

Quick Definition

A shoulder lock using a figure-four grip on the opponent's arm.

Full Explanation

The kimura (double wristlock or chicken wing) is a shoulder lock named after Masahiko Kimura, who used it to defeat Helio Gracie. You grip your own wrist while controlling their wrist, forming a figure-four. Then you rotate their arm behind their back, attacking the shoulder. It's versatile - usable from guard, side control, north-south, even standing. The kimura grip itself is also a powerful control position for sweeps.

Examples in Context

"I used the kimura grip to sweep, then finished the submission"

"Kimura from north-south is one of my favorites"
