What is Kata Guruma in BJJ?

Pronunciation: kah-tah goo-roo-mah

Quick Definition

A judo shoulder throw similar to the fireman's carry in wrestling.

Full Explanation

Kata guruma (shoulder wheel) is a judo throw where you lift your opponent across your shoulders and throw them. Similar to a fireman's carry in wrestling, you duck under their arm, get your head and shoulder under their body, and rotate them over your shoulders to the ground. In modern judo, the drop-knee version is more common since grabbing the legs was banned. In BJJ, both standing and drop-knee versions are used.
