What is Grip Stripping in BJJ?

Also known as: Grip breaking

Quick Definition

Techniques for breaking your opponent's grips on your gi or body.

Full Explanation

Grip stripping is the art of breaking your opponent's grips. In gi, this includes the two-on-one strip (grabbing their gripping hand with both of yours), the circle strip (rotating your arm out of their grip), and the punch strip (pulling your arm sharply downward). In no-gi, stripping wrist grips and breaking headlock control are essential. Effective grip stripping prevents your opponent from establishing their game and is a fundamental defensive skill.

Examples in Context

"I stripped his collar grip before he could attack"

"Grip stripping is as important as grip fighting"
