Grip strength in BJJ comes primarily from the forearm muscles, including the flexor digitorum profundus and superficialis. These muscles are extremely taxed during gi training from constant gripping of collars, sleeves, and pants. Grip endurance is as important as maximum grip strength. As grips fatigue, technique deteriorates. Building grip strength through training, dead hangs, and grip tools improves both gi and no-gi performance.
