What is Collar Choke in BJJ?
Also known as: Cross collar choke, Cross choke
Quick Definition
Any gi choke using grips on the collar to apply pressure to the neck.
Full Explanation
Collar chokes are a family of gi submissions that use grips on the opponent's collar to choke them. This includes cross collar chokes, loop chokes, bow and arrow, baseball bat choke, and many others. Cross collar choke from guard is one of the first submissions taught in gi BJJ. The collar provides tremendous leverage for choking because the fabric can be pulled tight across the carotid arteries. Collar chokes are a defining aspect of gi jiu-jitsu.
