What is Choke in BJJ?
Also known as: Strangle, Strangulation
Quick Definition
A submission that restricts blood flow or air to force a tap.
Full Explanation
Chokes are submissions that either restrict blood flow to the brain (blood chokes) or airflow to the lungs (air chokes). Blood chokes compress the carotid arteries and cause unconsciousness in seconds - these are more effective and safer. Air chokes compress the trachea and are painful but slower. Most BJJ chokes are blood chokes. Tap early to chokes; they work fast.
