Cauliflower ear develops when the ear cartilage is damaged by friction or impact, causing blood to pool between the cartilage and skin. If not drained quickly, it hardens into permanent scar tissue, giving the ear a bumpy, misshapen "cauliflower" appearance. Common in grapplers and wrestlers. Ear guards prevent it; prompt draining treats it. Many grapplers wear it as a badge of honor.
