What is Blood Choke in BJJ?

Quick Definition

A choke that restricts blood flow to the brain via the carotid arteries.

Full Explanation

A blood choke compresses the carotid arteries on the sides of the neck, cutting off blood flow to the brain. This causes unconsciousness within 4-10 seconds if held tight. Blood chokes are the most effective and safest type of choke because they do not damage the airway. The rear naked choke, triangle, and bow and arrow are all primarily blood chokes. They cause no pain before unconsciousness, which is why tapping early is important.

Examples in Context

"Blood chokes cause unconsciousness faster than air chokes"

"Most BJJ chokes are blood chokes targeting the carotid arteries"
