What is Back Control in BJJ?

Also known as: Back mount, Rear mount

Quick Definition

The most dominant position in BJJ, controlling your opponent from behind with hooks in.

Full Explanation

Back control (or back mount) is considered the most dominant position in BJJ because your opponent cannot see or attack you while you have access to chokes. To score points (4 in IBJJF), you need hooks in - your feet hooked inside their thighs. From here, the rear naked choke is the highest-percentage submission. Getting to the back and finishing from there is a fundamental BJJ skill path.
