What is Armbar in BJJ?

Also known as: Juji gatame, Arm lock, Straight armbar

Quick Definition

A joint lock hyperextending the elbow, one of the most fundamental submissions.

Full Explanation

The armbar (juji gatame) hyperextends the elbow joint by controlling the wrist and lifting your hips against the elbow. It's applied from many positions - guard, mount, side control, back. The attacker's legs control the opponent's body while they extend the arm against their hips. It's often the first submission taught because it demonstrates core BJJ principles: control, leverage, and attacking joints.

Examples in Context
