What is Ankle Lock in BJJ?
Also known as: Straight ankle lock, Achilles lock, Footlock
Quick Definition
A leg lock attacking the ankle by extending the foot.
Full Explanation
The straight ankle lock (Achilles lock) is the fundamental leg lock, legal at all belt levels in IBJJF. You control their leg with your legs in ashi garami position, wrap your arm around their ankle with your wrist blade on the Achilles tendon, and arch back while pushing your hips forward. Unlike heel hooks, ankle locks attack the ankle joint, not the knee, making them safer to train.
