What is Air Choke in BJJ?
Quick Definition
A choke that restricts airflow by compressing the trachea.
Full Explanation
An air choke compresses the trachea (windpipe), restricting airflow to the lungs. Unlike blood chokes which cause rapid unconsciousness, air chokes are painful and take longer to render someone unconscious. Air chokes can cause injury to the trachea and are generally considered less effective and potentially more dangerous than blood chokes. Most BJJ practitioners prefer blood choke mechanics, though some techniques involve elements of both.
Examples in Context
"Air chokes are painful but slower than blood chokes"
"The cross collar choke can work as either a blood or air choke"
