Affiliation is the larger organization an academy belongs to. Major affiliations include Gracie Barra, Alliance, Atos, Checkmat, and Renzo Gracie. Being affiliated provides access to curriculum, seminars, competition teams, and community. Some academies are independent. Affiliation doesn't determine quality - great (and not-so-great) instruction exists in all affiliations.
