What is ACL in BJJ?

Also known as: Anterior cruciate ligament

Quick Definition

The anterior cruciate ligament in the knee, vulnerable to leg lock attacks.

Full Explanation

The ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) is a critical ligament in the knee that prevents forward movement of the tibia. It is the primary target of inside heel hook attacks in BJJ. ACL tears are the most feared injury from leg locks because they often require surgical reconstruction and 6-12 months of rehabilitation. This is why tapping early to heel hooks is so critical - damage can occur before significant pain is felt.
