What is Absolute in BJJ?
Also known as: Open weight, Open class
Quick Definition
Open weight division where competitors of any weight can compete.
Full Explanation
Absolute (or open weight) is a tournament division with no weight restrictions - a 140 lb competitor could face a 250 lb opponent. It tests technique against size and is often seen as the ultimate test. Winning absolute at major tournaments is highly prestigious. Technique can overcome size, but big skilled opponents are always dangerous. Roger Gracie famously won multiple absolute titles despite not being the biggest competitor.
